34-year-old Hayako Tatsuki/Nao Matsushita is single and a teacher in charge of a first grade class at Heiwa-cho Elementary School on the outskirts of Tokyo. She lives with her parents Tatsushi/Isao Bito and Naoko/Keiko Matsuzaka who run a tofu shop. Hayako has a fulfilling life as a teacher. She is adored by her students and has also established good relationships with fellow teachers Mika Kugayama, Umeko Narimasu and Rentaro Sendagi. Mika, Umeko and Rentaro are all single. Among them, Mika has a strong desire to get married and seems to take an active part in searching for a marriage partner, but she has never asked herself why she wants to marry so badly. That said, Hayako herself unexpectedly feels loneliness in the course of her daily life without any particular reason. She is not concerned about marriage even though she wants to marry the person she loves some day. That is until her father collapses and is hospitalised one day. His life is not in danger, Hayako suggests that her parents close their tofu shop. But the next morning, she sees her mother fumbling with the preparation of the tofu alone in the shop. Seeing the commitment and strong bonds of her parents, who have been together for a long time, through her own eyes, Hayako finally starts to consider marriage seriously. She confidently finishes the presentation and immediately gets onto a taxi headed for Times Square. When she arrives at her destination, Makoto calls Toru but he doesn't pick up the call. Irritated at not being able to meet despite her desire to see him, Makoto calls him again. She leaves a phone message. At that moment, she hears a male voice behind her and swings around to see Toru standing there... The two of them meet for the first time in a long while on the streets of New York. One morning, a man buys breakfast and a newspaper at a convenience store in the business district. The name on the man’s name card is Kosuke Asahina/Arata Iura. Asahina, who has been released from prison, is working at a company which undertakes server maintenance and inspection. When he returns home after finishing the late night shift, his younger sister Yoko/Saki Aibu, who has not contacted him since he came out of prison, shows up. Then Makoto hurriedly returns to Japan because she has a week’s break from work. She visits Next Innovation and meets old time work buddies. Makoto attempts to leave quickly to search for lodging while she is in Japan, but ends up staying at Toru’s home.
