Miyamoto Musashi/Ebizo Ichikawa was the child of an era when Japan was emerging from decades of civil strife. Lured to the great battle of Sekigahara in 1600 by the hope of becoming a samurai; without really knowing what it meant. He regains consciousness after the battle to find himself lying defeated, dazed and wounded among thousands of dead and dying. On his way home, he commits a rash act, becomes a fugitive and brings life in his own village to a standstill; until he is captured by a weaponless Zen monk.

The lovely Otsu/Ryoko Yonekura, seeing in Musashi her ideal of manliness, frees him from his tortuous punishment, but he is recaptured and imprisoned. During three years of solitary confinement, he delves into the classics of Japan and China. When he is set free again, he rejects the position of samurai and for the next several years pursues his goal relentlessly, looking neither to left nor to right.

Ever so slowly it dawns on him that following the Way of the Sword is not simply a matter of finding a target for his brute strength. Continually striving to perfect his technique, which leads him to a unique style of fighting with two swords (Niten-ryu) simultaneously, he travels far and wide, challenging fighters of many disciplines, taking nature to be his ultimate and severest teacher and undergoing the rigorous training of those who follow the Way.

He is supremely successful in his encounters, but in the Art of War he perceives the way of peaceful and prosperous governance and disciplines himself to be a real human being. He becomes a reluctant hero to a host of people whose lives he has touched and been touched by. And inevitably, he has to put his skill against the naked blade of his greatest rival; Kojiro Sasaki.

Kato/Tomokazu Miura, the #2 man in the Sanno-kai group, warns regional crime boss Ikemoto/Jun Kunimura about his increasingly friendly dealings with rival regional crime boss Murase/Renji Ishibashi. In order to appease Mr. Chairman's suspicions of any type of planned coup, Ikemoto orders Otomo/Takeshi Kitano, crime boss for the smaller Otomo group, to take action against the Murase group.

Notes:"The Outrage" is Takeshi Kitano's first yakuza movie since 2001. The movie is said to contain a frightening level of violence.

Synopsis: 2003 film. Blind Zatoichi/Takeshi Kitano makes his living by gambling and giving massages. Zatoichi wanders into a town run by sinister gangs and a powerful samurai. He's destined for violent showdowns when he stumbles on two beautiful geishas avenging their parents' murder... Duels, wit and a touch of zen! Kitano's update on the legacy of one of Japan's most iconic cinematic figures is an exhilarating watch, the more tender moments conflicted by a barrage of bloody violence. Takeshi remains true to his source, undergoing the sedate transformation to play the blind swordsman and part time masseuse Zatoichi himself, as well as co-ordinating the action. His purists will no doubt abhor the witty sense of fun laid on thick in certain characters (a gambling sidekick and an insane neighbour) and the little nuances of irreverent genius (a drum dancing soundtrack and a ho-down finale orchestrated by Japanese dance troupe 'the Stripes'), but this isn't the Yakuza bloodletting of his earlier films, rather a more charming reflection on feudal life, with a distinct post-modern twist. Further confirmation of this is provided by Takeshi's story, which focuses more on the plight of two avenging Geishas (one male) hunting for the prestigious killers of their parents, rather than the motivation for our titular hero, yet Zatoichi does leap into action when he agrees to assist the siblings. This movie won Kitano a film award in Canada.
