The parody to Doctor X and opposite of Daimon Michiko: Money-loving surgeon Kaji Hideki/Masanobu Katsumura, who goes the nickname “laparoscope magician”, loses his head over a big paycheck of 500,000 yen and agrees to be the doctor on duty at Honokura Hospital in the mountains surrounded by nature. Along the way, meaningful words “nothing on this day” are aimed at him by the local people. Kaji arrives at the hospital despite his growing suspicions and is guided inside the hospital by the malenurse Nakata Kazuma. A series of disturbing incident happen from here at this hospital which is rumoured to be haunted by the spirit of a girl.

Synopsis: Surgeon Kaji Hideki (Katsumura Masanobu) has earned himself the nickname “laparoscope magician”. He is skilled but greedy. Because he chose money over title and power, his career progression has been slower than his peers. Kaji gets demoted to Teito Medical University Hospital’s Takamatsu 24th Branch Hospital for assisting in Daimon Michiko’s (Yonekura Ryoko) surgery. He calls Michiko a demon and treats her like the god of pestilence as a result of this demotion and numerous troubles he has to suffer. Then, Kaji is transferred to Teito Medical University Hospital’s Oarai 8th Branch Hospital in the town of Oarai, Ibaraki Prefecture. Hailed as a super doctor from Tokyo, Kaji feels smug. On his first day of work, Mifune Haruka (Miyawaki Sakura), the daughter of a Diet member is urgently hospitalised for appendicitis. At the same time, a poor old man called Tanami Shigeo (Muramatsu Toshifumi) whom Kaji helped in the street, is also admitted and found to have a serious illness that cannot be cured. So Kaji has a wealthy patient whose surgery will be easy vs a poor patient whose surgery will be difficult. He tries to give priority to Haruka which triggers opposition from rookie surgeon Misaki Kenta (Miura Takahiro) who believes that money is not necessary to save a person’s life. What will Kaji’s choice be in the end?

Kagerou-ezu 2016 Drama Special *Ryoko Yonekura

Nui/Ryoko Yonekura is lost after the sudden death of her adoptive father Shimada Mataemon. Her own father met an untimely death when he was about to expose the corruption of the shogunate. Mataemon’s son Shimada Shinnosuke/Koji Yamamoto casts away his sword to learn medicine. They are sent off by their guardian Wakisaka Yasutada/Naoto Takenaka, a shogunate administrator for shrines and temples, and the two of them go their separate ways. Five years later, the eleventh shogun Tokugawa Ienari/Masahiko Tsugawa Masahiko is in his final years. Even though Ienari has handed the position of shogun to Ieyoshi/Tamotsu Ishibashi, he still wields the real power. To continue enjoying wealth and power even after he passes away, Ienari’s concubine Omiyo no Kata/Yuko Nakamura, who has been in his favour for a long time despite his legal wife Tadako/Kayoko Shiraishi, desires to have her own grandson Maeda Inuchiyo installed as the next shogun. Making use of his right-hand man Mizuno Minonokami/Houka Kinoshita and others, Omiyo no Kata’s backer Nakano Sekio/Jun Kunimura wheels and deals for the purpose of making Ienari write the directive that will determine the next shogun. On the other hand, Wakisaka is trying to clean up the corrupted shogunate and inner palace.

He sends Nui into the inner palace in order to find out its actual state. The strategy succeeds. Nui, who calls herself Tomi, endears herself to Omiyo no Kata and rises in rank of room attendant for the lady-in-waiting Kikukawa/Saori Tominaga. Before long, Nui identifies liaisons between the monks of Kannouji and Sajima/Atsuko Takahata and other ladies in waiting. She is determined to expose the collusion between Kannouji, where Omiyo’s biological father is the head monk, and the unforgivable relationships between the ladies in waiting of the inner palace and the monks. Nui is undertaking this undercover investigation without regard for the danger she is putting herself in, for the sake of Shinnosuke whom she secretly loves. After political power is set right, she wants him to become a samurai again. Shinnosuke is now a back-alley doctor and is staying with a female called Toyoharu/Yui Natsukawa, who is a master of a style of Japanese joruri music and the shamisen. One day, Kikukawa’s drowned body is found in the castle town. In truth, Kikukawa is Toyoharu’s younger sister. Certain that this case is connected with the corruption in the inner palace, Toyoharu sneaks into Nakano Sekio’s residence to search for the truth. Meanwhile, Ienari collapses from a stroke. Nakano takes advantage while Ienari is weak and finally succeeds in obtaining his written directive that the next shogun will be Maeda Inuchiyo. Will the battle for succession be settled with this? And what about the outcome of the love between Nui, Shinnosuke and Toyoharu?

The treasure of the company Teikoku Shinju, a natural pearl called the ‘Golden Star’ is stolen. The ‘Golden Star’ is said to be expensive enough to buy a New York skyscraper. The theft is made public and Teikoku Shinju’s share price plunges. This incident triggers an internal struggle between the company’s chairman Iwakura Jusaburo/Nishida Toshiyuki and president Iwakura Tsuneko/Zaizen Naomi for the company president’s position. Tsuneko, the daughter of Teikoku Shinju’s founder and Jusaburo’s step-sister, is forced to take responsibility and step down. Learning about the family’s infighting from media reports, Sawaguchi Nobuko/Yonekura Ryoko hides her beauty with black glasses and loose, disheveled hair, and goes into the home as a housekeeper. She has a specific objective to fulfil at the Iwakura household. Nobuko had gone to see the ‘Golden Star’, which was displayed in a department store, and encountered an enigmatic man (Yokota Eiji) who suddenly appeared in front of her. The man seemed to have a connection to the ‘Golden Pearl’ and the Iwakura family. He had encouraged her to try wearing the pearl like the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ painted by Vemeer. As customers and news reporters swarmed around them, Nobuko had fled the place without thinking. But in doing so, the precious pearl earring was lost. According to store personnel, that man had taken it out. Nobuko’s intuition tells her that the man is involved in the theft of the ‘Golden Star’ and she guesses he will show up at the Iwakura home some day. There is a portrait in the Iwakura home of a man who resembles him as if in confirmation of her conjecture. What is this man’s true identity? After that, the more the battle between the chairman and company president heats up, the more the share price of Teikoku Shinju continues to mysteriously rise. Why did the pearl disappear?

Miyamoto Musashi/Ebizo Ichikawa was the child of an era when Japan was emerging from decades of civil strife.
