Relationships fall apart, or become stronger, when dalliances and alternate lives are uncovered. This insightful and vibrant film explores the connections, both tenuous and binding, between a variety of couples who enter the Tokyo underworld. A red-light district hotel manager confronts two unexpected and shocking guests, a Korean escort underestimates the strength of love, and fugitives from justice spar with detectives with secrets of their own that they wish to keep under earth. The film delves into the secret lives of the characters with combined humor and seriousness. It is a difficult task, yet the director manages it deftly. The emotional impact is created in part by hand-held camera work. I am not usually a fan of this, yet here it works extremely well. Some touching film themes revolve around how much we are willing to fight for our partners and how far we are willing to go in letting them make their own choices. "Every one of your little gestures," a woman tells her boyfriend at a possible point of no return "meant so much to me." I see much of my life in each of the characters, and that is part of the beauty of this film. I felt like I entered the life of each character and was not simply watching them. Seen at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

One Million Yen Girl EN Sub *Yu Aoi

A young woman has to choose between money, love and freedom in this comedy-drama from Japan. Suzuko/Yu Aoi is twenty-one years old and has served a short sentence in jail after her co-workers caught her conducting some extra-legal business. Deciding a change of locale is in order, Suzuko moves out of her parents' home and begins holding down a series of odd jobs, determined to travel to greener pastures as soon as she saves up one million yen (roughly $9,500). After delivering newspapers and working as a cleaning lady, Suzuko ends up at a resort hotel, where she hires on with the staff. Suzuko strikes up a romance with a young man living nearby, but with her bank account nearing seven figures, she decides she must stay true to her original plan and hits the road, making her way to the mountains where she happens upon a peach farm. Suzuko's bankroll begins to grow again until her new employers learn that she's done time in jail. Miyuki Goto/Kou Shibasaki plays Oiwa (well known Edo period maid to the Shogunate), the protagonist in a new play based on the ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan. She pulls some strings to get her lover, Kosuke Hasegawa/Ebizo Ichikawa cast in the play, even though he's a relatively unknown actor. Other performers Rio Asahina/Miho Nakanishi and Jun Suzuki/Hideaki Ito lust after Miyuki. Off stage the cast's possessive love and obsessions exist as reality. Trapped between the play and reality, the cast's feelings for each other are amplified. She rushes to Sena's apartment and finds out that her fiancé has skipped town. With no money and no where to go, she moves in with Sena. Sena likes Ryoko/Takako Matsu, a college sophomore. He likes her a lot, but just doesn't have the courage to ask her out. Momoko is Minami's best friend and is also a model. She provides much of the comedic relief in this show. Shinji is Minami's younger brother who just happens to be better than Senna at piano. He opens a bar/night club. Rumiko is Shinji's girlfriend. Sasaki-sensei is Sena's professor at college and is always encouraging Sena to perform at the next piano competition.

Yoko becomes more interested in the Chinese myth surrounding the tattoo, and unknowingly wishes to fulfill what her mother left undone. A tragedy triggered by Yoko and Tomokawa enrages her grandfather and destroys their passionate relationship. But while Tomokawa struggles with his guilt, Yoko plays her ultimate gamble...
