Kawabata Akira, a new fire fighter, is late in reporting for work on his first day. Because of that, he cannot do anything even though he is made to wear fire-retardant clothes over his own clothes and is taken to the scene of a fire. Standing rooted to the spot, he stares with a dazed expression. It had been his wish to be in the “day shift” which would not mobilized. Despite the poor grades that Akira deliberately scored at the firefighting academy, he ended up being assigned to the firefighting team – the front line of fire fighting activities. Of all things. Akira joined firefighting just because he would be a civil servant and his fellow firefighters are aghast. Kageyama Yohei, the head of the firefighting unit, takes him off and puts him in the charge of the Emergency Medical Services unit. This team has “neither the time to eat nor the time to sleep”. It has the highest mobilization rate within the city and also gets many unreasonable requests which are not pressing. Akira does not find meaning in this job. He has behavioral problems like shoving arrogant members of the public at scenes of fire and keeps antagonizing the senior fire fighters around him. As a result, he becomes the target of wagers betting when he will quit. Akira is very disgruntled and unmotivated. One day, at the scene of a traffic accident, he is faced with a child who is in a state of cardiac arrest. Matsui Kaede, the head of the unit, gives him a pep talk. The child is revived due to his treatment and he feels moved after saving a person’s life for the first time.
