Borderline *Teppei Koike & Norika Fujiwara

Kawabata Akira, a new fire fighter, is late in reporting for work on his first day. Because of that, he cannot do anything even though he is made to wear fire-retardant clothes over his own clothes and is taken to the scene of a fire. Standing rooted to the spot, he stares with a dazed expression. It had been his wish to be in the “day shift” which would not mobilized. Despite the poor grades that Akira deliberately scored at the firefighting academy, he ended up being assigned to the firefighting team – the front line of fire fighting activities. Of all things. Akira joined firefighting just because he would be a civil servant and his fellow firefighters are aghast. Kageyama Yohei, the head of the firefighting unit, takes him off and puts him in the charge of the Emergency Medical Services unit. This team has “neither the time to eat nor the time to sleep”. It has the highest mobilization rate within the city and also gets many unreasonable requests which are not pressing. Akira does not find meaning in this job. He has behavioral problems like shoving arrogant members of the public at scenes of fire and keeps antagonizing the senior fire fighters around him. As a result, he becomes the target of wagers betting when he will quit. Akira is very disgruntled and unmotivated. One day, at the scene of a traffic accident, he is faced with a child who is in a state of cardiac arrest. Matsui Kaede, the head of the unit, gives him a pep talk. The child is revived due to his treatment and he feels moved after saving a person’s life for the first time.

Characters
Koike Teppei as Kawabata Akira
A new firefighter. He has no intention of firefighting and became a fireman because he would be a civil servant. He had hoped for the “day shift” which is not dispatched to disaster sites, but is assigned to the most punishing firefighting unit and starts to experience numerous scenes. He has refused to form deep interpersonal relationships ever since his father’s sudden disappearance during his childhood.

Kakei Toshio as Kageyama Yohei
The head of the firefighting unit which Kawabata Akira is assigned to. In the past, he was called “Monster Kageyama” and gave his subordinates strict directives in order to rescue survivors in need of help. He is also respected in firefighting, but withdrew from the front line after the death of a subordinate at a disaster site. He witnessed the Great East Japan Earthquake which he was mobilised to assist, and made a comeback to the front line.

Yamaguchi Makiya as Matsui Keisuke
The head of the rescue unit. Matsui Kaede’s older brother. He dotes on his niece, Sakura. An expert in emergency rescue, he has also participated in the Japan Disaster Relief Team and has the confidence of his men. Like Kaede, he aspired to be a firefighter due to the death of their younger sister in an earthquake. He is unhappy that Kageyama Yohei is not strict with Kawabata Akira who is not like a firefighter.
Fujiwara Norika as Matsui Kaede
A paramedic and the head of the Emergency Medical Services unit. A divorced mother raising a daughter Sakura. The death of her younger sister, who was an elementary school student, in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, became a strong incentive for her to continue in her emergency rescue job. Her ex-husband shows up to make her hand over custody of Sakura.
Hashizume Isao as Sugano Osamu
The chief of the South Fire Department where Kawabata Akira and the others work. He proactively goes out to community disaster prevention courses, interacts with local residents and makes an effort to bolster their awareness of disaster prevention. He made his way up from the front line where he also experienced being the head of the rescue unit. His subordinates have strong faith in him. He ventures to let Akira, who wishes to do the “day shift”, be assigned to the front line.
Ishino Mako as Kawabata Ikue
Kawabata Akira’s mother. Because she was a full-time housewife, she went through considerable hardship right after her husband’s disappearance. She is genuinely happy that Akira could get a job in firefighting.
